TURBOT STREET UNDERPASS, BRISBANE, QLD

Project Type: Place Activation Strategy

Year: 2021

Client: Mirvac

The Turbot Street Underpass is an under-utilised part of the Brisbane CBD, albeit located only moments from King George Square and Roma Street Rail Station. Since its construction in the 1970’s the underpass has been slated with vagrancy, underutilisation and anti-social behaviour and various attempts have been made to revitalise the underpass but to no avail.

As part of its place strategy and activation work on the adjacent 80 Ann Street project, Reactivate was also engaged by the Mirvac as part of its work with Brisbane City Council to design an activation plan to revitalise the underpass. The activation plan considered various cultural events, physical ‘hardscaping’, local area partnerships, coordination with surrounding retailers and was also designed to leverage the planned streetscape improvement works as part of 80 Ann Street’s development, resulting in a unified experience between the two ground planes.
